Anime Thread Anonymous 11/28/2020 (Sat) 21:40:51 No. 145
For anime discussions
I like underrated anime such as No.6 and Zankyou no Terror. No.6 had good plot and Zankyou no Terror's soundtracks were awesome https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Dj1QYHir4A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZgI59TMFc8

Monster is my favourite anime ever, Johan is one of the best antagonists in fiction

Recommendations 1) Another Plot: In 1972, Misaki, a popular student of Yomiyama North Middle School's class 3-3, suddenly dies partway through the school year. Devastated by the loss, the students and teacher behaves like Misaki is still alive, leading to a strange presence on their graduation photo. In Spring 1998, Kōichi Sakakibara transfers into the same class, where he meets Mei Misaki, a quiet student whom their classmates and teacher seemingly ignore. The class is soon caught up in a strange phenomenon, in which students and their relatives begin to die in gruesome ways. Realizing that these deaths are related to the "Misaki of 1972", a yearly calamity that has struck most every class 3-3 since 1972, Kōichi and Mei seek to figure out how to stop it before it kills more of their classmates or them. 2) WataMote Plot: 15-year-old Tomoko Kuroki believes that she would become popular upon entering high school because she has become well-versed in the world of otome games. In reality, she finds that she has become an loner, though she still forces herself to try out what she has learned about achieving popularity. As she progresses through high school, Tomoko attempts to improve her social status among her peers. (kinda cringy) 3) Anohana Plot: In Chichibu, Saitama, a group of six sixth-grade-age childhood friends drift apart after one of them, Meiko "Menma" Honma, dies in an accident. Five years after the incident, the leader of the group, Jinta Yadomi, has withdrawn from society, does not attend high school, and lives as a recluse.(NEET) One summer day, the ghost of an older-looking Menma appears beside him and asks to have her wish granted, reasoning that she cannot pass on into the afterlife until it is fulfilled. At first, he only tries to help her minimally because he thinks he is hallucinating. But since Menma does not remember what her wish is, Jinta gathers his estranged friends together once again, believing that they are the key to solving this problem. All of the group joins him, though most of them do so reluctantly. Things grow increasingly complicated when his friends accuse him of not being able to get over Menma's death, as they cannot see her and believe Jinta is hallucinating. Menma shows her presence to the group in order to prove that she is indeed real. All the group members eventually wish to shoulder the blame for Menma's death and long-hidden feelings among the group are rekindled. The group struggles as they grow from trying to help Menma move on and help each other move on as well. (sad anime) 4) Shiki Plot: On particularly hot summer in 1994, in a small quiet Japanese village called Sotoba, a series of mysterious deaths begin to spread like wildfire when a strange family moves into the long-abandoned Kanemasa mansion on top of a hill. Megumi Shimizu, a young girl who wants to leave the village and move to the city, pays them a visit and never returns. She is later found lying in the forest and dies soon later after she is found. Doctor Toshio Ozaki, director of Sotoba's only hospital, initially suspects an epidemic; however, as investigations continue and the deaths begin to pile up, he learns—and becomes convinced—that these are the work of "shiki", vampire-like creatures, plaguing the village. A young man named Natsuno Yuuki, who hates living in the village, begins to be pursued and becomes surrounded by death. (very underrated anime) Also put the Shiki picture under spoiler just in case
(59.22 KB 704x396 kino_no_tabi.jpeg)
>>151 5) Kamisama no Memochou Plot: Narumi Fujishima is the main protagonist. He is a high-school student who keeps himself uninvolved in school life to the point of not knowing most of his classmates' names. Through circumstances, he participates in his school's "Gardening Committee", along with Ayaka Shinozaki. From then on he is also persuaded to join NEET, an amateur detective agency filled with unemployed slackers who solve cases on their own. This agency is led by "Alice", a childish, anti-social extreme shut-in, who never leaves her room. However, Alice has proven herself as a resourceful hacker and an good detective. Throughout the series, Narumi, accompanied by the other members of NEET, solves crimes, including murders, using their limited resources and Alice's genius intellect. (Not an extremely good anime but not bad either) 6)Kino no Tabi (My favorite anime) Plot: In Kino's Journey, the protagonist, Kino, accompanied by a talking motorcycle named Hermes, travels through a mystical world of many different countries and forests, each unique in its customs and people. She only spends three days and two nights in every town, without exception, on the principle that three days is enough time to learn almost everything important about a place. Kino says that in The Land of Visible Pain that this principle is probably a lie, specifically pointing out "if I stay any longer, I'm afraid I will settle down." The recurring theme of the anime and novels is described by the phrase, "The world is not beautiful, therefore it is." Kino's Journey explores what the anime director Ryūtarō Nakamura describes as 'a radical sense of beauty'. Brutality, loneliness, nonsense, oppression and tragedy are often juxtaposed against compassion and a fairytale-like atmosphere. Technology in this world exists, sometimes to the level of science fiction. Kino's world is not heavily magical although it includes elements of fantasy.

Death note >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The only thing about the anime I didn't like was how stupid Misa was also the anime went downhill after L died
Death Note's soundtrack was great. I still think about how it's such a waste that the composer got jailed for weed

Junji Ito anime sucked ass but the manga was and still is superb, a solid 10/10. Best horror manga I've read This video does a good job at explaining why the anime falls short: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAYFi6bLSfst

I think D.Gray-man had a lot of potential, it had the potential to be known as the best shounen manga by a female mangaka but the anime's ending was abrupt and there were a lot of fillers in it. It needed The Brotherhood Treatment badly and it did kind of get one (D.Gray-man Hallow) but I don't like Hallow's art style

Just learned Kino no Tabi had a remake in 2017
I've never finished Naruto... I got so disappointed when I learnedabout Neji's death that it ruined the whole deal for me, I stopped watching it and thus never finished it Also there are too many fillers, I know they're skippable but still...
Also Ichiruki would've been better

any of you girls ever watch utapri? it's been a while since i watched much anime but i doubt anything will ever top the feeling of going 'oh i guess i'll check this out' and straight away getting hit with that DOKI DOKI DE KOWARE SOU SEN PERCENT LOVE i mean this is a site for idols so i feel like an anime about an idol boygroup would be a natural fit lol

>>217 i love utapri! i watched all the seasons. i also played the psp music games (on an emulator), and started to play otoya's route on the first otoge. i never finished it because my japanese level was low so it was hard. i also very addicted to shining live when it came out in english, i had to delete the app and the twitter account linked to my game account so i could stop playing it and prevent it from ruining my life further lmao. earlier this year i played again for some time, but it's not as fun as before. since 2018 i don't really follow utapri anymore, i got tired of weeb shit and shifted to kpop instead. i really went from starish to bts kek. >i doubt anything will ever top the feeling of going 'oh i guess i'll check this out' and straight away getting hit with that DOKI DOKI DE KOWARE SOU SEN PERCENT LOVE same, anon. such an iconic song. i watched the first season when it was airing. it was kinda dumb, but a fun anime. after the 3rd season it became just stupid. the 4th one was such a shit show i only kept watching to laugh at how terrible it was... i still love my boy tokiya. i also like camus, his asshole personality is entertaining to me for some reason lmao also his songs are the best.

mecha is underrated
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoZ0Zwab6Oc this isnt about an anime series but i liked this animated mv a lot. stopped playing pokemon after gen 5 or 6 but loved it as a kid
>>396139 >underrated it’s the opposite of that
is jujutsu kaisen any good? i’ve seen a lot of praising and the animation seems beautifully done but shounens are always so overrated by moids that i don’t know if it’s really worth it
>>401138 i read 40 chapters of the manga and didnt care for it. idk, it felt hollow to me more than most popular shounen, like it was assembled by an AI going down a checklist. apparently the anime adaptation has a lot of pretty animation so maybe it's worth it if you like that
>>401138 its not the pinnacle of anime but its very solid. definitely an enjoyable watch
>>401138 it’s very overrated. imo the anime is better, but only because the manga is uggo and the plot execution is originally mediocre to begin with. it’s fun to watch because it looks good, and that’s about all it has to offer. it isn’t a bad thing if you like looking at animation, and the sound is alright too
>>401149 i thought the story of the anime and the character relationships was pretty good. i'm definitely looking forward to s2. i think 1st anon should just watch a few episodes to see if its for them

im just waiting for mob psycho 100 at this point. if anyone has any recs based on that id love to hear them >>401155
>>401163 i've tried one or two episodes of mob psycho 100 when it was first released but didn't get into it. the hype around it intrigues me tho, how would you rate it?
>>401155 i think >>401147 is right describing the story as “hollow.” to be frank it’s careless shonen entertainment where the deepest characterization is reserved for either characters who are destined to die or aren’t really interesting in the grand scheme of things >>401152 i was still keeping up with the manga throughout the anime airing and after a while the relationship development goes to shit. watching the anime was like a pretty distraction from what’s to come of the characters i used to really like >them
>>401163 theyre not action packed like mob, but if you want a lot of character focus -uchouten kazoku/eccentric family -psycho-pass -3gatsu -houseki no kuni -maybe eureka seven -maybe noragami (underrated as a shounen imo, but i dont want to oversell it either) -planetes
>>401165 its one of my favourite animes ever. the animation is amazing but i love that all the characters are kinda ugly. it's quite different from one punch man, there's real character growth for all the main characters and the relationships are very heartwarming to me. i dont wanna hype it up too much for you cos you're inevitably gonna be disappointed but i started that show with no expectations and it blew me away
>>401168 i loved mob as a mc. he was one of those 'good boi' mcs in a very wholesome way without it feeling too on the nose or cloying
>>401166 nooo this makes me sad but at least i can lower my expectations for s2 >>401167 i haven't heard of most of these so i'll definitely be checking them out
>>401169 ia. despite being a good guy he had his flaws that he had to work through while still maintaining his values. and then you have other characters like his brother or that blonde guy who also have their own little character arcs
>>401160 YES. tokyo revengers is genuinely fucking good. i haven’t watched the anime still but the manga is one of my top 5 in the past 5 seasons hands down. it’s super fucking good and you should totally read it or watch it. nothing beats a good old delinquent friendship story >>401163 have you read the ONE web comic edition? it’s even funnier that way. i’d recommend his other work OPM too. if you just want something lighthearted and funny; nichijou, bo7, and asobi asobase come to mind. osomatsu is really funny too. however those are all more gag comedy. for a surprisingly engaging plot out of something you initially check for laughs, i can’t even think of anything that does what one did with mob and opm atm >>401165 it’s very very good nona
>>401166 i didnt get very far with only 40 chapters but part of why i was meh about jujutsu is that the mc came across as so meh about everything. i dont have a ton of patience these days for main characters who are tugged along for the ride while they're like "ooooh that's bad i guess" "oooooh that's neat i guess" unless the other characters are really amazing to make up for it. there were a few things i liked. there was a clearly defined eventual goal in the beginning with the fingers thing. some of the powers. gojo and megumi (but not enough to continue for them).
>>401168 >>401169 you convinced me i'll try it again then, i like character-focused animes. also like >>401167 i highly recommend psycho-pass too. great mix of dystopia, sci-fi and thriller genres with philosophical undertones. the characters are great and the story is full of twists.
sakamoto desu ga is a fun comedy manga imo if you want something funny. the comedic timing is better in the manga than how it was done in the anime adaptation. it's only 4 volumes so it's pretty short but the amount of character development it has for that length is decent
>>401172 yeah on one hand i like how special mp100 is but it pains me that i may never watch something that makes me feel the same way kek. i havent read the manga and i dont plan to for now, but i do occasionally catch up with the opm manga. the current arc has been going on so long and ive become a bit bored especially since saitamas scenes are the ones im really interested in
>>401173 >that the mc came across as so meh about everything his personality is teenage boy so as a reader i feel like he didn’t have much to offer either. retarded comparison but csm was rolling out chapters at the same time but denji was the more enjoyable one between the two. the fingers, gojo, megumi, etc. all continue being “explored” but shibuya arc really fucked shit up for the series imo. it felt like the writing was as slow as possible while the rest of the plot was getting tweaked behind the scenes, as far as the manga goes. it’s an exaggeration but fucking 15 pages equating to 2 minutes of in-universe time is ridiculous. and i use the word explored lightly because it wasn’t until recently, that after the tedious finger banging battles and 1-dimensional gojo kfc, do we get to anything remotely nitty and gritty about megumi or nobara who is fucking DEAD or at least being baited to be or any of my other favorite characters who did not get killed off because the writing is feces
>>401179 wtf nobara is dead?? the only main female character??? i fucking hate scrotes
>>401179 yeah sounds like there might be too much frustration to put up with for any of the fun. i'm willing to check out the author's next manga if i ever hear of it, maybe he just needs more time in the oven and better planning next time.
>>401177 BASED. this was one of my favorite comedy manga >>401167 backing the houseki no kuni rec. it’s very good. ignore the genderspecial twittards who try to claim it because it’s fucking based. i liked noragami a lot too, but despite loving eureka 7 when i was younger i think it’s overrated now >>401180 >>401181 it’s seriously overrated shit. nobarafags live to suffer
>>401185 houseki is a ride. usually people say "whew that was a wild ride" as hyperbole but for me it has been a rollercoaster. to any nona thinking of checking out houseki there are details and some key moments that the anime adaptation did better than the manga for the story it covers imo. ive watched the anime and read all the manga chapters so far
psycho-pass nonas what did you like most about it? i watched both the first and second seasons but i hated it… the plot felt all over the place and the mcs were annoying. i didn’t understand how the sibyl system was supposed to work though, so i think my autism surrounding that made me give it a worse rap than it deserves. is it worth another try? >>401178 kek tbh i only read the webcomic versions, so even with drawn out plot points it doesn’t feel too long since i find his art fun and interesting
>>401195 >it has been a rollercoaster worded. god it’s a fucking lot. i don’t know where to begin. i didn’t expect this to make me as emotional as it did when i picked it up. based diamond pic seconding watching the anime and reading the manga, the manga is so objectively scarce in ink for what the anime covers that you can read it from the beginning after watching and get through the chapters in no time
>>401211 eh i think if you already tried it and didnt like it, dont bother. from what i remember i liked the premise of a highly privacy-invasive system that still produced good metrics for safety and efficiency (on the outside) and the sheer determination of the male mc. and how it explored some of the fallout effects of allowing a small pool of supergeniuses who think of themselves as like the nation's god in an automated system to micromanage everyone and everything
shrilling to nonas who are looking for something with characters to love, good friendships, some laughs, a healthy dose of action, and a bit of sci-fi and tragedy i really recommend tokyo revengers. it’s not that long and the plot has excellent pacing. the character growth is so abundant it’s palatable. husbandos are also bountiful if that’s also what you are looking for
>>401238 its been on my backlog but ill bump it up if it's got good pacing
>>401221 when i watch the houseki OP after a long time my heart cracks. goddamn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9MuI4gfyiA
>>401211 if you really hated it i don’t think it’s worth rewatching and wasting your time again. i watched it a while ago but i remember liking the mcs and characters in general - white haired villain husbandos are always a hit. most importantly, even though the story can get convulated sometimes, i got really invested in it. more than the plot itself I like the themes explored and the questions raised; it’s not extremely deep but it made me think a lot about justice, good/evil, scientific progress and ia. knowing how the sibyl system works technically doesn’t really matter, it’s more about what it implies. big spoiler the system is thought to be a supercomputer and thus infallible and superior to human justice. through the villain we see that an ia determining what’s good/bad is nonsense and it can be exploited - how could a non sentient being value human morals? but after all it is revealed to be a human based system. the idea of a perfect justice is thus explored first through the lens of an ia based system, which could seem ideal but shows its failures quickly. then the illusion of this perfect justice is totally dropped when it is revealed to be human based and thus prone to mistakes, even though it’s more realistic since justice is an inherent human quality and shaped by human morals and values. the illusion is what keeps the population in check more than the system itself - its the belief in justice that matters. sorry for sperging in midly broken english but i guess that’s why I love this show: i could go on about the philosophical aspects of it since i find them to be very relevant nowadays and fondamental questions.
>>401265 >cinnabar i’m not crying you are i’m going to force myself to rewatch and reread this some day and it’s going to fucking suck
bring him back gege you fucking retard
i will shit on jjk but i do love the plethora of erratically mentally dispositioned husbandos
the bodies are funny looking, but liar game is one of my favorite manga of however you describe this mind game high stakes survival gambling genre. if nonas have recommendations like this, or like kaiji, future diary, btooom, etc. with more focus on the game than the death, i will take them
>>405267 dunno if you've watched one outs, but it's from the same creator. from fukumoto there are the early chapters of gin to kin even if it's a little silly, and pretty much all of his zero series is gambling focused as well and a little more lighthearted than kaiji

ive been slowly watching my way through the lodoss OVA series and i love how much personality and flair something seemingly simple like varied line weight adds to the animation. when an animated show has really uniform and thin lineart it tends to make things feel more sterile or stiff

>>498624 the plot and writing in the lodoss ova isnt anything special but i actually like the simplicity of it so far, it doesnt try to chew off more than what it has time for. it's a very elegant looking show imo. the kind of project the animators way back then would've seen as a reason for entering animation, to be able to help make something like it
only seeing this now, the bebop netflix op https://youtu.be/-8m8xC8Gswo i know being comical is its thing but, but it does feel a bit silly. i am pleasantly surprised though. it’s been so long since i’ve watched it. i don’t remember most of it. i only saw it through because it was highly recommended, i wasn’t a big fan of it. maybe i was too young then, but there was a lot about it that i didn’t like. i might give it another chance since my tastes have changed >>498653 it’s really beautiful, and for only 13 episodes i prefer it being curt with the plot. visually, this is the kind of anime that made me like anime

>>647024 if you havent already, theres other popular liked shounen with good fights like hunterxhunter. its slower at the start though. or fma or mob psycho. akudama drive is short but it has a lot of that over the top quality to it. kaiji isn't action since its gambling but it has that aspect of a protagonist struggling a lot to win by the skin of their teeth
>>647024 you will absolutely fucking love golden kamui

posting a couple reccs that are less common compared to the popular ones tales of phantasia OVA - story is nothing special since its a shortened version of a jrpg plot but has a lot of nice animation if you're into that. only a few episodes long the twelve kingdoms - about a girl who has to find a way to survive in a strange land and how to trust again, and then claim the throne. based on a book from the 90s (written by a female author), so it's an older type of isekai where it's more classic adventure and the world can be harsh on the protagonist. it has 45 episodes but the best part worth watching (about the first main character) is about half of that iirc
another post about an action anime i really enjoyed but isnt seen around often as a recommendation compared to the popular shows: garo the animation (24 episodes and a movie) if you like action shows you might like this, as long as youre willing to forgive the use of cgi during the action scenes because of all the details in the suits and the monsters. the studio who did the cgi (studio orange) is good for anime standards imo and it wasnt difficult for me to get used to it. this show i think i enjoyed so much because it combined things that appeal to me personally a lot: action heavy fights, a story that follows through on what it promises, and a setting+world building that has decent effort put into it. the setting is medieval but its not the washed over dragon quest type of medieval, theres some very direct influence from the older architecture of spain put into it and it takes on a tone on the serious side. story and character wise its not going to blow anyone away, but because it follows through without any souring twists i found it to be an overall satisfying watch by the end. its been a while but i dont remember any coomerpandering being an element of the show, its pretty direct in being an action centered show. theres some sexual content but most of it is in the very first episode where things arent as they seem, and romance is a smaller side thing to the main story. theres a female character on the main cast whos competent and fairly likable, and has her own b plot for a bit. the characters have certain flaws about them and the 'good guy organization' have some qualities that arent angelically perfect and cause some tension. theres 2 episodes close to the middle that felt weird and out of place for some reason though, that was the weakest bit of this show but it doesnt have much impact on the main story
watched 4 episodes of madoka and i truly dont understand the rave
>>1522913 you have to get through the whole thing to really get it. just watch the movies instead, the have everything you need to know instead of watching the show. i hope it clicks for you like it did for me

>>1523201 abridged version of the show with remastered decors and outfits, i personally prefer the show like any unabridged version but the movies are fine. one of my favorite anime too
>vol 1 of blood on the tracks so, so unbelievably relieved by the big reveal at the end. you could tell something wasn’t right from the manga cover alone, and how the art made everything look strange with seii’s expressions. i am unbelievably relieved that it wasn’t incestous like i was worried about after reading some comments under the chapters. i did suspect the mother killed the cat and the depiction of it dead at the end of the first was disgusting, it disturbed me a lot more than the final pages with her having a mental breakdown, and seiichi losing his composure. i appreciate the foreshadowing to something happening to the aunt by showing us how annoying seiichi found her and her words, by focusing on her mouth and exaggerating her smile. the butterflies when the cousin was pushed seem like they’ll be a reoccurring motif. i also predict that seiichi’s first girlfriend will be murdered there’s over 130 chapters of this shit, i’m not sure how long it could possibly go but i’ll do the first 100 before calling it quits, assuming it isn’t complete ass before then. moids seem very, very afraid by the events in this manga, but i suspect they’re being retarded if this is as bad as it gets. but if the covers are anything to go by, then it surely becomes more haunting the more you read. on the topic of the covers, i like the painted style with some of the official artwork featured. it’s nice >>1523080 same
another painted volume cover. i like the watercolor look, it reminds me of tokyo ghoul’s nicer artwork further predictions >seiichi is the murderous psycho >the mother’s ptsd came from her parents making her complicit in murders >everyone and everything that has given seiichi a “hard time” in life has died there’s a webtoon called bastard that is slightly similar to these predictions. the mc, who believed he was innocent and forced to assist in killings, is a former psychopath all along, who used to partake in murders with his father for fun as a child. his father kills himself at the end
sui ishida was not meant to be a writer
i never ended up finishing the tokyo ghoul manga because it was depressing just for the sake of being depressing
>>2075330 the animu was garbo but i realized very quickly after trying the manga that it was all ishida’s fault. huge fan of the pretty artwork though
>>2075294 >>2075306 i'm reading this too and enjoy it a lot. i think the author said something like that the story is only just starting, so there are probably gonna be a lot more chapters until it's finished
>>2075294 >>2075378 yeah it develops quite a bit but then runs out of steam. the direction the author is going in for the ending is very odd but i haven't read any more since i found out he is trooning out/romanticizing troons in his latest work
